Forty-six of 50 available online spots for the September 23-24 The BIG One at Laurel Park are spoken for. And since our weekly qualifiers guarantee two spots per weekend, that means that only two opportunities to qualify remain. This week’s comes on Sunday—but there’s plenty more action where that came from.

Labor Day Weekend brings September on in style at HorseTourneys and HorsePlayers. It’s our last opportunity of the year to play Saratoga and Del Mar—which is kind of sad. But parting can be such sweet sorrow when $60,000 and at least 18 seats to top onsite tourneys are up for grabs.

His name may not be all that familiar to handicapping contest players. But Victor Mendes Sr. of Boca Raton, Fla., has been part of the South Florida racing scene for decades—wearing a number of hats during that time, including those of jockey’s agent and professional handicapper.

Congratulations to Rene Morety, winner of the August 26 Monmouth Super Qualifier. In addition to their cash winnings, Morety and runner-up Nick Maiuri won $10,000 entries to the 2017 Breeders’ Cup Betting Challenge.

A HorseTourneys first is on tap for Saturday: a $100,000 Guaranteed tourney with $40,000 to first place. We couldn’t be more excited about it. And yet it’s just one of 17 featured tournaments on what is annually one of the biggest weekends of the U.S. racing calendar.
