Last Friday’s $75 NHC Qualifier at HorsePlayers was very well attended. Despite a somewhat imposing winning ratio of 1 in 143, the tourney attracted 314 entries.

This is one of those rare weekends in which Saturday ends one month and Sunday begins another. Wait…actually, it’s not all that rare—it happens once every seven months on average. But if you like horse racing, and if the months in question are September and October, then you know it’s an important weekend that’s chock full of important Breeders’ Cup prep races.

Ed Peters started the second and final day of The BIG One with just $200 left from his starting bankroll of $1,000. And it went downhill from there.

A daring, all-in bet very early in the day propelled Eric Moomey to a lead he maintained throughout the day here on Day 1 of The BIG One at Laurel Park. In Laurel, Md.

Much of the HorseTourneys crew will hit the road this weekend to work The BIG One at Laurel Park. Thanks to a couple of $7,000 buy-in entries the field stands at 54 with only three buy-in seats remaining. As exciting as this competition will be with $100,000 in cash, eight BCBC seats and 10 NHC seats on the line, we’ve got plenty going on right here to keep those not in Maryland quite busy.

As the classic George Carlin joke goes, “Have you ever noticed that anyone on the highway driving slower than you is an idiot? And anyone driving faster than you is a MANIAC?”
I was reminded of this recently while reading certain responses to some of my recent blogs.

It was already a pretty good September for Dan Shugar. The Los Angeles business owner had won $12,500 on Saturday, September 9 when finishing first in that day’s $25,000 Guaranteed Pick & Pray.

Only two online seats are left for the all-inclusive September 23-24 The BIG One at Laurel Park. That means just two vacancies to compete for at least $76,000 in cash, eight BCBC seats, 10 NHC seats and 10 HPWS entries (or $1,500 in cash if you prefer) against a field of no more than 57. And there’s a $500,000 lump sum bonus on the table if you win The BIG One and the 2018 NHC. So don’t miss this Sunday’s final qualifier. But there’s a lot more this weekend that you may not want to miss either.

I had the pleasure of interviewing Brent Johnson recently after his victory in the August 26-27 Woodbine Weekend Handicapping Tournament.
