The three days of featured tourney action last weekend took on distinctly different personalities. One day was dominated by a single player. Another was a low-scoring day that saw many contests come down to the last race. And on Friday, things were sort of all over the map.

It was a weekend of endings and beginnings. The 2017 NHC Tour season effectively ended with Saturday’s NHC Final Six tourney at HorsePlayers. The next day, qualifying for the 2018 The BIG One officially began. Throughout the weekend, there were many close finishes—and some that were not so close.
We’re back to the norm of late—a four-day featured-tourney weekend. Unfortunately this will be our last one for about a month. So we plan to make the most of the extended Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. weekend with 18 featured events, including our first qualifier to the September 22-23 The BIG One at Laurel.
The date has been set for the 2018 renewal of The BIG One. It’s September 22-23, and once again, it will be hosted at Laurel Park.
You’ll see that there’s a comma between the two numbers in the title of this posting rather than a dash. That’s because Saturday, January 6 didn’t go as planned, to put it mildly.
We’re in a weird stretch of the calendar when a normal Friday-Saturday-Sunday weekend is the exception rather than the rule. Two weeks ago was Christmas. Last week was New Year’s. Next week is Martin Luther King Jr. weekend. This weekend, though, we’ll all have to make due with just three days of featured tournaments. But we feel we are up to the task.
It’s hard to say for sure who a “Contest Player of the Year” award for 2017 might go to. A sensible choice would be Ray Arsenault for having won the NHC in the early part of the year. Christopher Dewey is the current leader, as of this writing, in the NHC Tour standings, so he could be worthy. As could Ed Peters who won The BIG One and finished second in the Breeders’ Cup Betting Challenge.
But if we were to present a Contest Player of the Year award for 2018, there would only be one choice.
Congratulations to Alan Bourke, Brian Knowles and (HorseTourneys qualifier) Mark McGuire. They were the winners last weekend on Friday, Saturday and Sunday, respectively at Surfside.
