His name may not be all that familiar to handicapping contest players. But Victor Mendes Sr. of Boca Raton, Fla., has been part of the South Florida racing scene for decades—wearing a number of hats during that time, including those of jockey’s agent and professional handicapper.
For all of the rich and exciting featured tournaments that took place last weekend, one contest—and one winner—stands above the rest: Saturday’s winner of HorseTourneys’ first $100,000 game, Victor Mendes Sr. of Boca Raton, Florida.
Congratulations to Rene Morety, winner of the August 26 Monmouth Super Qualifier. In addition to their cash winnings, Morety and runner-up Nick Maiuri won $10,000 entries to the 2017 Breeders’ Cup Betting Challenge.
A HorseTourneys first is on tap for Saturday: a $100,000 Guaranteed tourney with $40,000 to first place. We couldn’t be more excited about it. And yet it’s just one of 17 featured tournaments on what is annually one of the biggest weekends of the U.S. racing calendar.

He’s stamped his ticket to Las Vegas to compete in next year’s National Horseplayers Championship, where millions of dollars will be at stake.

SHELBYVILLE, Ind.; – Aug. 19, 2017 – Scott Ksionzyk made his drive down from London, Ontario Canada worth the trip, winning the second annual National Horseplayers Championship (NHC) Qualifier at Indiana Grand Racing & Casino Saturday, Aug. 19.
Looking back over the weekend weather at HorseTourneys, one would have to say it was fair on Friday, sunny on Saturday, and downright bomb-y on Sunday.
The menu at HorseTourneys is never static. As seasons change, so do race meets and upcoming onsite tournaments. In addition to organic change, however, we like to generate our own positive change in terms of increased purses and exciting new formats. The upcoming weekend is a good example of that.
Having spent last week at the Wynn Handicapping Challenge and then the Saratoga Challenge, I was reminded of one of the truly omnipresent—yet almost entirely unspoken—factors in contest play: drinking.
