Kevin “Duke” Matties, a 46-year-old professional gambler from Laguna Beach, Calif., took the lead during the first day of competition and didn’t look back, holding on for a near wire-to-wire victory in the 2018 Orleans Fall Classic, held October 11-13 at The Orleans Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas.
Matties earned $52,132.50 for his triumph, plus an additional $2,482.50 for having the best first-day score. Joe McCoy finished second and received $22,342.50. Tom Blosser was third and won $14,895. Cash prizes were paid to the top 20 finishers and the top three scorers during each individual day of the three-day contest also received cash bonuses.
The three-day, mythical-money tournament attracted 331 entries this year (at $500 each), up from 220 entries one year ago. The total prize pool this year was $148,950.
